The passing of a cherished family member

The Whittier Christian High School community learned that Richard Devylder (Class of 1988) died from natural causes on Saturday, August 8. Rich served as an assistant basketball coach on the freshman staff and assisted the varsity team in 1989 when the Heralds won the CIF Southern Section Basketball championship.

After earning his BA in  Communications at Long Beach State, Richard held several executive leadership positions at the county and California state level. In 2010 he was appointed as a Senior Adviser to Ray La Hood, the Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation.

In services on Friday, numerous speakers from across the country lauded Rich's passion and commitment to  independent living and caring for the less fortunate. All agreed that "his was a life well-lived. He made a difference." Our sympathies extend to his mother Joan, his sisters, brother and numerous nieces and nephews.
