The 2022 Herald football team was an improbable team. Prior to the start of the season, Whittier Christian combined with 25 other schools from around Southern California to form three new leagues strictly for football. The Herald football team moved out of the Olympic League to the newly formed Cottonwood League.

Coming off a 2-6 season and with a new coaching staff led by Head Coach Frank Manriquez there was a lot of uncertainty with the program. The Heralds would go both 3-2 versus non-conference and conference opponents to finish the regular season at 6-4. This qualified the Heralds for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
The Heralds would open the playoffs with an round home victory against Temecula Prep before heading on the road to face the top seed in their bracket, Bolsa Grande High School. The game was a thrilling one, both teams going back and forth until with under 2 minutes to play the Heralds scored the game’s final touchdown, advancing with a 28-21 victory.

The Heralds would go on to defeat St. Monica Catholic and Lynwood High School to win the Division 14 Southern Section Championship. Offensively the Heralds averaged just over 31 points per game, paced by Division 14 CIF Player of the Year Jake Martinez who would run for 1,954 yards on the season with 26 touchdowns. Joining Martinez on offense were All-CIF players Caleb Mer and Ian Mgrdichian Roth.

Defensively several players received All-CIF recognition for the Heralds led by team captains Julian Linares and Adam Olivas joined by Johnny Rojas, Adrian Hernandez and Caeden Thomas.
