1984 Football

This Whittier Christian team was the most dominating team ever. It did not have a real close game until the CIF Championship game. This team had a well-balanced offense with Danny Sampson passing for 2,050 yards and 25 touchdowns and Mark Ortega running for 2,050 yards from the tailback position. Mark was also CIF Player of the Year, the fourth in school history.

The defense was the best ever, posting 5 straight shutouts with a total of 6 for the season. Giving up an average of only 3.2 points per game, the defense was led by Reid Lehner, Todd Lugo, John Kali, Garry Wiggins, Steve Caffrey, Kraig Johnson, Dave Murrane and Mike Neal. What a defense.

This team averaged 34 points per game on offense which has only been topped by the 1990 team’s 38 points per game. The ’84 team had the best point differential of 30 points a game. Three players made All-CIF: Mark Ortega (TB), Kraig Johnson (S) and Russ Weiss (OT). What a great way to top off “The Great Year.”
