1991 Boys Volleyball

The 1991 boys volleyball team entered the season knowing they had the pieces to do something special. They had height at the net, strong passing in the back row and a senior core that understood how to compete. Under Coach Herron the Heralds played a brand of volleyball built on discipline and trust. They did not chase highlight plays. They valued clean side-out offense, strong serves and a steady defensive floor.

As the postseason began the Heralds carried themselves like a group ready for the moment. Their first two playoff matches showed the balance of the roster. Brandon Blevins and Adam McIlhenny controlled the middle and pin areas with blocks that shifted momentum. Troy Biehl anchored serve-receive and helped the Heralds stay in system. Players like Clint Hay and Aaron Stidham added quiet but important plays that kept rallies alive and extended leads.

The CIF final against Calvary Chapel Santa Ana revealed the team’s identity. The Heralds opened with a 15-13 win that required poise in tight moments. The second set showed their ability to seize control as they pushed out to a 15-6 finish. Calvary Chapel responded in the third set and handed WCHS a 12-15 setback, but that only sharpened the Heralds for the fourth. With the match tightening the Heralds trusted their training. They passed well, blocked with purpose and let their hitters take confident swings. The 15-9 close-out reflected the maturity of the roster.

Sohegian earned CIF Player of the Year honors for his work throughout the season and his timely scoring in the postseason. Yet he was surrounded by teammates whose reliability made the run possible. This 1991 title became more than a single accomplishment. It marked the point where Whittier Christian boys volleyball discovered a winning identity that carried forward. It showed what could happen when a team leaned into its strengths and played with unity.
